A home built for manaakitanga, professional cooking, and Mid Century character worth keeping. That was the brief our clients brought to the renovation of their 1977 home nestled in the Pacific Northwest.

A 1977 Mid Century home near Portland, Oregon, untouched since its original owner moved in. Timber panelling, original glazing, and the quiet confidence of late Mid Century architecture fully intact. A genuine time capsule.

The new owners wanted to honour the bones and build a home around manaakitanga, the New Zealand concept of generous, open-hearted hospitality. One is co-founder of The Modern Proper, a widely followed recipe platform, so the kitchen also needed to perform as a professional filming environment.

The strategy was amplification, not erasure. Walls came down to open a double-sided kitchen in maple burl timber, anchored by two marbles and a sculptural tree reaching into the double-height ceiling. A concealed scullery keeps it calm. In the lounge, a reimagined conversation pit, cork ceiling, and built-ins around the piano complete a home built entirely for gathering.

Tactile, considered, and made for people.
