First Mates Last Laugh is a vibrant, waterfront bistro in Auckland’s Westhaven Marina, designed to offer a relaxed yet elevated dining experience. With just four months to transform the space, the design team rose to the challenge, crafting an environment that captures the essence of coastal living, blending New Zealand-inspired materials with an international LA beach club aesthetic.

The design incorporates natural materials like French pavers, oak, marble, and colours drawn from the harbour, creating a tactile and fun atmosphere with a residential, welcoming vibe. Louvred windows bring in natural light, while varied seating arrangements encourage socialising and intimate dining experiences. A checkered-tile servery draws attention to the kitchen, inviting guests to engage with the culinary artistry on display.

Efficient spatial planning ensures that functionality aligns seamlessly with style, creating defined zones for dining and drinking without compromising comfort. Carefully considered acoustics further enhance the vibrant yet comfortable ambiance. The result is a dynamic space that fosters both casual gatherings and lively celebrations, making First Mates Last Laugh a destination for both locals and visitors alike.
