Transforming the old Hotel Grand Chancellor Auckland Airport into a one-of-a-kind boutique hotel that embraces the playful, unexpected, youthful, and considered ideals of the Naumi brand.
The original Hotel Grand Chancellor was in dire need of a complete overhaul both inside and out. With the goal of creating a boutique hotel that fully embraced the ideals of the Naumi brand — playful, unexpected, youthful, and considered — we set out to transform this space into a one-of-a-kind experience that would be unlike anything else in the New Zealand market. Our first directive was to create a space that was distinctively unique, capturing the essence of the Naumi brand in every detail. Our second directive was to craft a hotel experience that was truly exhilarating — a feast for all senses. With an aversion to all things white, we embarked on a journey to transform the tired building into one bursting with colour, texture, and energy.
The renovation included a complete reimagination of reception, bar, lounges, and restaurant areas through to the bedrooms — which find a delicate balance between ‘at home’ comfort and ‘out-of-this-world’ wonder. Dialling up the drama are two icon-inspired suites: the eclectic Ziggy Suite, takes inspiration from fashion icon Missoni and signature bright colours and prints; and the riotous Dottie Suite, referencing Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama and her synonymous polka dot artworks. With a focus on creating an environment that was both luxurious and playful, we carefully curated each space to create a unique and memorable experience that would truly set this hotel apart.
“Working with Material Creative was always fun, eclectic and fast paced. When I was initially looking for a designer for Naumi Hotel’s foray into the Auckland market, I was looking for a design team that was out of the ordinary, and one which we could push design and operational boundaries for a hotel. Material Creative were a powerful design team that did Naumi Auckland Airport Hotel proud.”
